“INRS taught me to never stop learning. The scientific world is constantly changing and you have to know how to adapt, experiment and seize opportunities as they arise.”

INRS has always been a breeding ground for curious and ambitious minds. Michele D'Elia is a perfect example. Passionate about biology and its practical applications, he turned his time at INRS into a springboard for a flourishing career in the clinical diagnostics industry.

Michele first completed a Master's degree in Experimental Health Sciences before going on to complete a PhD in Virology and Immunology. This experience marked a turning point in his career, developing not only his scientific expertise, but also his ability to solve complex problems with rigor and creativity. “Every discovery, no matter how small, was a source of immense satisfaction,” he recounts.

Beyond the research, Michele finds the INRS a stimulating, collaborative environment. “What impressed me most was the spirit of mutual aid and the closeness to professors and other students. INRS really fosters an interdisciplinary approach that enables us to think bigger,” he explains. He recalls with pleasure the informal exchanges in the corridors, the impassioned discussions over a cup of coffee and the invaluable mutual support that marked his career. These informal discussions were often a source of ideas and challenges that opened up new scientific and human perspectives.

After obtaining his PhD, Michele went on to work in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industry, where he now applies the skills he acquired at INRS to help generate evidence for the usefulness of new diagnostic tests.  His current role at Roche Diagnostics enables him to combine his passion for innovation with his desire to make a tangible impact on public health. He works on strategic projects aimed at optimizing the patient journey and making medical solutions more accessible. “Every day, I know that my work contributes to improving patients' quality of life. It's extremely motivating,” he confides.

When asked what advice he would give to current students, Michele stresses the importance of curiosity and flexibility. “INRS taught me to never stop learning. The scientific world is constantly evolving, and you have to know how to adapt, experiment and seize opportunities as they arise.” He also encourages students to develop a professional network right from their studies, as collaborations and exchanges are essential to progress in the scientific and industrial fields. His experience has made him realize the extent to which spontaneous contacts and discussions can open unsuspected doors.

Today, Michele D'Elia embodies the success story of an INRS graduate: a passionate scientist, an accomplished professional and an ambassador of innovation. His career is a perfect example of how INRS shapes tomorrow's researchers and leaders. Looking back, he expresses immense gratitude to his mentors and colleagues, who enriched his experience and enabled him to chart his own path to excellence. “Without INRS, I wouldn't be where I am today,” he gratefully concludes.
