Contributing to the development of society through scientific discoveries and the training of a new generation of scientific, social, and technological innovators.
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only institution in Québec devoted exclusively to graduate studies and research.
Founded in 1969, INRS is made up of four research centres based in Laval, Montreal, Quebec City, and Varennes, each of them dedicated to sectors of central importance for Quebec’s economic, social, and cultural development.
A key institution for partnerships and training of scientific leaders
INRS is renowned for disseminating high-level research carried out in Quebec and worldwide, transferring knowledge and know-how to advance human knowledge and innovation, and training new researchers to meet the scientific and societal challenges of the 21st century.
Research is conducted using an action research approach in partnership with industry, government, and civil society. INRS collaborates with numerous major partners at the regional, provincial, national, and international levels.
Multidisciplinary teams
Our professors and student researchers help advance knowledge in many areas, including the environment, health, telecommunications, energy, photonics, nanotechnology, new materials, urbanization, populations, culture, and society.
Most of our faculty members are actively involved in leading interuniversity research groups in the social sciences, hard sciences and technology.
Our multidisciplinary teams pursue fundamental research essential to the advancement of science in Quebec and around the world. Every year, they receive some $50 million in research grants and contracts, ranking number one for research intensity in Quebec and in Canada’s top three, according to Research Infosource.
