The INRS Foundation announces the creation, in collaboration with the management of the Centre Eau Terre Environnement, of the Peter Campbell Scholarship in Metal Ecotoxicology, in tribute to this pioneering professor of environmental sciences in Canada, who passed away on January 30.
Professor Peter Campbell has left his mark on the history of INRS, which he joined shortly after its creation. A key figure in the Centre Eau Terre Environnement, he was a pillar in the development of training programs and a driving force behind the growth of biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology research in Canada. His career at INRS, spanning more than 40 years, bears witness to an unwavering commitment to science, training the next generation and protecting aquatic environments.
Holder of the Canada Research Chair in Metals Ecotoxicology from 2001 to 2015, elected to the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002, founder of the pan-Canadian MITE network, mentor to over 70 students and trainees, Peter Campbell has left a profound scientific and human imprint. His expertise has been sought by government agencies, Aboriginal communities and the private sector alike.
In keeping with his wishes, a student scholarship has been created at the INRS Foundation by the Centre Eau Terre Environnement in recognition of his immense contribution to INRS and his field of expertise. Continuing his work, the Peter Campbell Scholarship in Metal Ecotoxicology aims to encourage and support doctoral research into the fate and effects of metals in aquatic ecosystems.
It is open to full-time doctoral students at the Centre Eau Terre Environnement. The first competition will be launched in September 2025, and the first scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded in January 2026. The amount of the scholarship will be increased every five years, in the spirit of sustainability and outreach to the student community.
A tribute event was held on May 9 in Quebec City to pay tribute to the memory of this exceptional researcher. Colleagues, former students, partners and friends gathered to pay tribute to his scientific contribution, his humanity and his profound benevolence. The new fellowship perpetuates his commitment to future generations of scientists.
The INRS Foundation would like to thank all those who contributed to the creation of this scholarship, and invites the community to keep Professor Campbell's memory alive by supporting the next generation of researchers that he held so dear.
