The Foundation is proud to announce that Safa Chaaben is the new recipient of the Leadership and engagement scholarship. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of a student who, in addition to her academic excellence, actively contributes to the INRS community through her leadership, collaborative spirit, and commitment.
As a doctoral student at INRS, Safa Chaaben is conducting research on the development of two-dimensional graphene-based materials produced using more sustainable methods. Alongside her research, she is actively involved in the student and scientific life of her center, convinced that research is most meaningful when it is accompanied by a commitment to her community.

- What led you to INRS? What stands out to you about your experience there?
My interest in research on advanced materials and sustainable development led me to pursue my doctoral studies at INRS. I was particularly drawn to the institute’s scientific excellence, its collaborative research environment, and the opportunities it offers students to contribute to high-impact projects. Since arriving at INRS, I’ve had an extremely enriching experience, both scientifically and personally. Beyond my research work, I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in several student community activities, including open house events, mentoring programs, sustainability initiatives, and events designed to help new students settle in. These experiences have allowed me to develop my leadership skills, build lasting relationships, and actively contribute to the vitality of our research center. - Can you describe the significance and impact of your research project?
My doctoral research focuses on the development and optimization of graphene-based two-dimensional materials produced using more sustainable methods. These materials possess exceptional electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties that make them promising for a variety of technological applications. One of the main challenges of my project is to design high-performance materials while prioritizing environmentally friendly approaches. In the long term, this research could contribute to the development of more efficient technologies in fields such as electronics, energy storage, and sensors, while promoting more sustainable research. - What does winning this scholarship mean to you?
Receiving the INRS Foundation’s Leadership and engagement scholarship is a tremendous honor. This recognition is particularly meaningful to me because it highlights not only my academic achievements but also my commitment to the community. This scholarship values aspects that are deeply important to me: sharing knowledge, helping others, mentoring, and participating in initiatives that contribute to the collective well-being. It encourages me to continue my involvement and reaffirms the importance of putting science to work for the community. - What are your plans for the future?
I hope to continue my doctoral research with the same passion while remaining actively involved in student and academic life at INRS. In particular, I want to expand my mentoring activities with new students, participate in initiatives that promote sustainable development, and help raise public awareness of research. In the longer term, I aspire to pursue a career in research and innovation where I can combine scientific excellence, collaboration, and community engagement to make a positive contribution to society.
