The INRS Foundation announces the creation of the Mario-Bergeron Scholarship, created in collaboration with the management of the Centre Eau Terre Environnement in tribute to this professor who left his mark on inorganic and environmental chemistry research at INRS for over 25 years.

Over the course of his career, Professor Mario Bergeron has distinguished himself through his pioneering work on the development of precious metals recovery technologies using gas/solid extraction approaches. A forerunner in the integration of more environmentally-friendly practices in the mining sector, he contributed to the upgrading and treatment of mining soils and tailings, as well as to the establishment of the very first analytical laboratory dedicated to mineral matrices in Quebec. He passed away on March 31, 2024.

Created to honor his remarkable contribution, the Mario-Bergeron Scholarship is intended to support students who follow in his footsteps, contributing to the development of new knowledge in the field of geosciences from a sustainable development perspective.

Valued at $5,000, this scholarship is open to members of the graduate student community enrolled in a program of study at INRS's Centre Eau Terre Environnement.

With this initiative, the Centre and the INRS Foundation wish to pay tribute to Professor Bergeron's scientific legacy and encourage a new generation of researchers to continue his work.

The selection committee is composed of :

  • Normand Bergeron - Full Professor
  • Alain Langlais - Former Research Officer to Professor Mario Bergeron
  • Michel Malo - Honorary Professor
  • Carole Parent - Former Advisor, Partnership and Development
